Natural Antibodies in Urinary Tract

Swedish scientists have discovered that antibodies in the urinary tract protect against infections.

The research from Stockholm’s Karolinska Institute is published in this week’s edition of the journal “Nature Medicine”. Women are most affected by infections of the urinary tract, with more than 60 percent suffering at some time during their lives.

With the appearance of more and more antibiotic resistant bacteria, the discovery can have important consequences for treatment. Professor Annelie Brauner compares the natural antibodies to soldiers at the front, fully equipped and waiting for an attack.
