Attack Closes Government Website

Saturday's Demonstration for the Pirate Bay

The Swedish police’s domestic intelligence agency is investigating an attack that crashed the government’s website Sunday.

The home page of the national police was blocked in a similar fashion on Thursday. Sweden’s crisis management agency has urged state bodies to protect their sites better.

The attacks followed a police raid against the Pirate Bay, one of the world’s largest Internet file-sharing sites. Several hundred people demonstrated in central Stockholm Saturday to protest the police action.

The Pirate Bay, which has returned from a server apparently outside Sweden, has criticised the attack on the government and police websites as destructive to the Internet. Meanwhile, Swedish Justice Minister Thomas Bodström has denied press reports the crackdown followed pressure from the American government.
