Sweden Calls for Guantanamo Closure

Published måndag 12 juni 2006 kl 11.02
Guantanamo prisoners

Swedish Foreign Minister Jan Eliasson says the suicides of three detainees at the American Guantanamo base show the importance of closing down the prison camp.

In a statement, Eliasson, who is also president of the United Nations General Assembly, repeats the Swedish position that the Guantanamo prisoners should either be brought to trial or freed.

Two men from Saudi Arabia and one from Yemen were found dead Saturday. They had hanged themselves with nooses made from sheets and clothes.
