Jan Eliasson and Pope Benedict met Saturday

Swedish diplomat Jan Eliasson, president of the United Nations General Assembly, is opening the first session of the new UN Human Rights Council in Geneva Monday.

Eliasson, who is also Sweden’s foreign minister, tells Swedish Radio News that he is hopeful the new body will function better than the Commission on Human Rights, which it replaces. The commission was strongly criticised because its members often included countries accused of human rights abuses.

On Saturday Eliasson met Pope Benedict XVI. Their discussions reportedly concerned globalization and religion.
