The winner of Sweden’s Elitloppet, Europe’s most prestigious trotting race, has been stripped of his title after failing a dope test.
France’s Jag de Bellouet showed traces of the prohibited , considered one of the world’s best trotters, will be anti-inflammatory drug diclofenac. Let’s Go of Italy, which finished second in last month’s race, was also disqualified for failing its doping test and the victory will be awarded to Sweden’s Conny Nobell, driven by Bjorn Goop.
”This is a tragedy for the Elitloppet,” Ulf Hornberg, head of Sweden’s national trotting association STC, told news agency TT. ”I feel deeply depressed, and no joy that we now have a Swedish winner.”
Swedish media described it as the biggest doping scandal in the country’s trotting history. Driven by Christophe Gallier, the 9-year-old Jag de Bellouet completed a kilometer in a record time of 1minute, 9.4 seconds to win the May 28 Elitloppet.
It was the 35th win in 109 races for Jag de Bellouet, who was making his first start outside France.
