Turkey’s EU Problem Over Cyprus

Published onsdag 28 juni 2006 kl 11.39
Prime Minister Göran Persson and his Greek counterpart Kostas Karamanlis

Swedish Prime Minister Göran Persson has expressed confidence that a standoff between Turkey and the European Union over Cyprus can be avoided.

Persson was speaking after a meeting with visiting Greek Prime Minister  Kostas Karamanlis. Turkey refuses to recognize Cyprus, which is an EU member, and has refused to open its ports and airports to Greek Cypriot traffic.

There’s concern this may block Turkey’s negotiations for EU membership. But Göran Persson says no enlargement has started without problems in the first phase.
