Possible Human Smuggling from India

Published måndag 3 juli 2006 kl 11.26
Immigration at Arlanda Airport

Police at Stockholm’s Arlanda International Airport are concerned about a sudden wave of young men from India who arrive and ask for asylum.

Since the end of May more than 30 Indians aged between 17 and 23 have arrived at Arlanda, from New Delhi via Moscow with tickets onward to cities outside the Europe Union, such as Tirana, Belgrade, and Damascus. There are direct flights to all of those destinations from Moscow, and there’s concern this is a ploy to get into the European Union without a visa.

The police say there are similarities with the wave of young Chinese who previously arrived at Arlanda, applied for asylum, and later disappeared. It’s believed they were involved in some kind of human smuggling ring and have moved on to other European countries.
