Sweden’s Annika Sörenstam won the US Women’s Open golf title for third time Monday.

In an 18 hole play-off in Newport, Rhode Island, the Swedish star defeated American Pat Hurst by four strokes. Sörenstam won the title previously in 1995 and 1996. It was the 10th major victory of her career. Only three golfers have won more.

In tennis, Sweden’s hopes at Wimbledon were kept alive Monday as Jonas Björkman beat his doubles partner, Max Mirnyi of Belarus in five sets in the men’s singles.

It’s the second time in his 15 year profession career that Björkman, the oldest player still in the tournament, has reached the last eight.

He’ll play Radek Stepanek of the Czech Republic in Wednesday’s quarter-finals.

Björkman and Mirnyi successfully defended their French Open men’s doubles title last month, and are second seeds at Wimbledon this year.
