Prosecutor Appeals Sentence for Genital Mutilation

Published onsdag 5 juli 2006 kl 11.23

A Swedish prosecutor is appealing the sentence imposed on a man for taking his daughter to Somalia and forcing her to undergo genital mutilation.

A court in Gothenburg last week found him guilty of child abuse, and sentenced him to 4 years imprisonment and 40,000 dollars in damages to his daughter. It’s the first conviction under Sweden’s law against female genital mutilation.

Now prosecutor Margareta Henriksson is appealing, calling for the sentence to be extended to 5 years.
