Björkman Through To Wimbledon Semi-Final

Published torsdag 6 juli 2006 kl 08.49

Sweden’s Jonas Björkman broke down in tears on Wimbledon’s court number 1 after winning a five set thriller against Radek Stepanek to set up a semi-final showdown with reigning champion Roger Federer on Friday.

The veteran Swede, who’s 34, took four hours and two minutes to overcome his czech opponent 7-6 4-6 6-7 7-6 6-4 in a match twice interupted by rain.

It’s only the second time that björkman, a doubles specialist, has reached a grand slam semi.

Bursting into tears in front of the delighted Court One crowd, Bjorkman said: ”I’m very emotional, I can’t believe I’ve won. ”To be playing in a semi-final at the age of 34 is a dream come true.

”I don’t have too many Wimbledons left and I just want to enjoy the tournament. You can never give up, you have to fight to the last point.”
