Call For Crack Down On Drunks Driving Boats

Published torsdag 6 juli 2006 kl 13.44

Sweden’s Justice Minister Thomas Bödstrom wants a crack down on the numbers of Swedes who take to sailing their boats at sea under the influence of alcohol.

Bodström wants to introduce stricter laws than the ones at present, which allow 1.0 blood alcohol content.

The justice minister would like the same 0.2 blood alcohol content rule that applies to drivers on the road. He also wants coastguards to have the same powers as traffic police in carrying out random breath tests.

More and more people are being arrested for being drunk at sea. Last year the figure was 109.
