Center-Rights Wants to End Conscription

Published tisdag 11 juli 2006 kl 11.09

Sweden’s four party opposition alliance says general conscription has served its purpose here and should be replaced with a new system.

Traditionally all 19 year old Sweden men are required for military service. But following the military cutbacks since the end of the Cold War, less than one-third are actually called.

Writing in the newspaper “Svenska Dagbladet” Tuesday, members of parliament’s defence committee from the Center, Moderate Conservative, Liberal, and Christian Democrat parties say Sweden spends hundreds of millions of dollars a year for training programs that aren’t useful for the military’s current main role, peacekeeping missions abroad.
