More Jailed for Drug Crimes
The number of prison sentences in Sweden for narcotics crimes is increasing.
According to the Swedish Prison and Probation Service last year was the first time the number of those imprisoned for drugs exceeded those convicted of crimes like theft or robbery.
The number of those serving life sentences in Sweden has also increased, and at 142 is almost twice the level of 1997.
However the total number of inmates at the country’s penal institutions has dropped. The prisons are now 98 percent filled, compared to 102 percent of capacity in 2004.
