Bardot: Ashamed to be French, may move to Sweden

Published torsdag 20 juli 2006 kl 12.38

French film star and animal rights activist, Brigitte Bardot says she may move to Sweden.

Bardot says she is ashamed of France’s efforts to stop a Swedish law aimed at improving conditions on Swedish mink farms. In an open letter to Prime Minister Göran Persson, she says she may spend her last years in Sweden because she feels ”closer to Swedish sensibilities than French insensibilities.”

Admitting that her image and international renown have always been linked to France, Bardot said, ”To the contrary of Garbo, who left Sweden to finish her days in the United States, perhaps I will leave France to finish my days in Sweden.”

According to a Swedish animal rights group, up to 1.4 million mink are killed in Sweden every year for their fur.
