Convicted Sex Offenders Left Untreated

Published torsdag 20 juli 2006 kl 12.55

A lack of treatment for convicted sex offenders made headlines here after yesterday’s historically stiff sentence for confessed serial rapist The Haga Man.

One in three convicted of sexual crimes is never given their mandatory treatment. That’s according to an article in Svenska Dagbladet and Niklas Långström at Karolinska Institute’s Centre for Violence Prevention. An effective treatment program is said to reduce the risk of a relapse by up to 40 percent.

Head of the sexual crimes unit at an institute outside Kristianstad, Bengt Månsson regrets that there aren’t enough resources to treat everyone. Priority is given to those in a high relapse risk zone.
