Nordin Kicked Off Team
Shot putter Jimmy Nordin was kicked off Sweden’s team for heavy drinking after failing to qualify for the European Championship finals.
According to Sweden coach Thomas Engdahl, Nordin got so drunk following his 27th-place finish in
Monday’s qualifying that team officials called police because they feared he would hurt himself.
Police picked him up at his hotel in Gothenburg on Monday evening and took him to jail to sober up. He was released around 3 a.m.
Engdahl said Nordin was thrown off the team adding that ”We have very clear rules when it comes to alcohol consumption,”
Engdahl went on to say that he was ”very surprised, very disappointed and sad.”
Nordin, 26, also faced a police complaint from security guards at the hotel who said he became violent when they approached him.
He filed his own complaint, saying the guards abused him.
Nordin told tabloid Aftonbladet his drinking binge was spurred by disappointment after missing the final.
The tabloid quotes him as saying that ”I tried to forget the qualifying event with alcohol. I started right after the competition by going to a pub and taking two shots of vodka. After that, I don’t know if what has been said is true or not.”
