Dramatic increase in Sweden’s population
The number of people increased by more than thirty-five thousand in the first six months of this year, compared to less than thirteen thousand during the same period last in 2005.
It is being partly put down to more babies being born, but mostly to the amount of asylum seekers taking advantage of temporary laws giving them a new chance to apply for a residency permit.
Forty-five thousand immigrants registered their arrival in between January and July according to official figures. The only time the figure was higher was in 1994, when people came to Sweden from the Balkans during the war there.
Many new arrivals are still coming from Serbia, but the highest proportion this year are from Iraq.
