Larsson Accused of Punching Opponent

Published måndag 21 augusti 2006 kl 11.09

Swedish soccer star Henrik Larsson faces a police investigation after being accused of punching an opponent during a match.

The former Barcelona striker now plays for the Swedish side Helsingborg. In the first half of the Swedish Cup semi-final against Elfsborg Saturday, Larsson allegedly jabbed defender Jan Jonsson in the stomach. Jonsson fell to the ground in pain and was unable to continue the game.

The incident went unnoticed by the referee and Larsson went on to score Helsingborg’s second goal. A fan filed the charge, and Helsingborg chief prosecutor Sven-Erik Alhem says he is launching a preliminary inquiry.

Helsingborg won the match on penalties after the two teams were level after extra time.
