Jämtin in Beirut Before Donor Meeting

Published måndag 21 augusti 2006 kl 11.19

Swedish Foreign Aid Minister Carin Jämtin was in Beirut Sunday to meet with Lebanese Prime Minister Fuad Siniora and his finance and economy ministers.

The meeting was in connection with the donors conference for the reconstruction of Lebanon, which is to be held in Stockholm on August 31st. Jämtin also toured Beirut’s war-battered southern suburbs. She told Swedish Radio News afterwards that the most acute need is to rebuild housing, as well as roads and bridges, and removing landmines.

Prime Minister Siniora has estimated the total reconstruction needs at more than one billion dollars. Representatives from 60 governments and organizations are to take part in the conference. The following day Stockholm will be hosting an international conference on the humanitarian situation in the Palestinian territories.
