Stockholmers Support Congestion Charges

Published tisdag 29 augusti 2006 kl 11.47

A new poll indicates a majority of Stockholmers favor making the city’s congestion charges permanent.

The Temo survey shows 51 percent support the tolls, while 40 percent are opposed. Stockholmers will be voting in a referendum on the issue in connection with the September 17th general elections.

The congestion charges were imposed on a trial basis during the first half of the year.

There will also be referendums on the issue in a number of the municipalities surrounding Stockholm, where the charges were very unpopular. The ruling Social Democrats say those polls are unofficial and won’t count, but the opposition center-right alliance says that if they take over the government, they will include the votes from other municipalities.
