Half a Billion Raised for Palestinians

Published måndag 4 september 2006 kl 11.43
Jan Egeland, UN Coordinator for the Humanitarian Affairs

Friday’s international donors’ conference in Stockholm raised 500 million dollars for humanitarian aid to the Palestinians.

Organizers said the situation in Gaza turned critical while the world focused on halting the month-long war in Lebanon. The conference urged Israel to open up closed border crossings into Gaza to allow the free movement of relief supplies.

The meeting’s host, Swedish Foreign Aid Minister Carin Jämtin, expressed disappointment that only ten percent of the donations are being channelled through the United Nations.

Organizers have expressed concern that sizeable sums may go straight to the Hamas-led Palestinian government.
