Majority Want to Maintain Reactors
According to a new poll 53 percent of Swedes want to keep Sweden’s nuclear power stations in operation until the end of their lifetimes during the next decade.
Swedes voted overwhelmingly in a 1980 referendum to phase-out atomic energy here. But so far only two of the country’s 12 reactors have been closed. Critics have accused the government of doing too little to develop alternative sources of energy.
According to the new poll, 30 percent of Swedes would like to build new reactors, while 12 percent want to close the remaining 10 immediately.
