Congestion Charge Ahead in Poll

Published tisdag 12 september 2006 kl 11.56

According to a new poll, a clear majority of Stockholmers are in favor of keeping the city’s congestion charges.

The survey indicates that 56 percent want the road tolls, while 34 percent are opposed. That’s a major swing from March when the “no” side was 3 points ahead.

Referendums on the issue will be held in Stockholm and a dozen surrounding municipalities in connection with the September 17th  elections.

The congestion charges are unpopular outside Stockholm, and the ruling Social Democrats say if they are returned to power they will only pay attention to the Stockholm vote. The opposition alliance has said if it forms the next government it will count the votes in all the referendums.
