Uncertain Road Toll Referendum

Published måndag 18 september 2006 kl 11.22

In a referendum on election day, Stockholmers voted in favor of retaining the congestion charge for entering or leaving the city. But the final result is still uncertain

Just under 52 percent voted for the tolls and around 46 percent against. But the “no” side won similar referendums in 14 surrounding municipalities.

The Social Democrats had said they would only count the votes from Stockholm, but the parties in the new government have promised to include all the referendums. The outcome of the controversial plan is still uncertain, as 11 municipalities in Stockholm county did not hold referendums on the issue.
