Published onsdag 20 september 2006 kl 14.09

Two people have been injured when a car exploded in the middle of Gothenburg, Sweden’s second-largest city on Wednesday. According to police, the injured were taken to the hospital after being hit by debris.

It is still unclear whether anyone was inside the car when it exploded around 11:45 local Swedish time (CET). The expolsion set fire to at least two other vehicles nearby.

It is unknown what caused the explosion, but police are treating the site as a crime scene.

Today’s incident follows another on Tuesday, when a taxi exploded in a Gothenburg suburb after someone placed a hand grenade beneath one of the car’s tires. No one was injured in the blast.

Police said they did not know whether the two incidents were related.
