Five Years Since Dawit Isaak’s Imprisonment

Published måndag 25 september 2006 kl 10.57

Saturday marked the fifth anniversary of the imprisonment of the Swedish journalist Dawit Isaak in his homeland Eritrea.

Isaak and several other journalists were arrested in Eritrea in September 2001, at the same time that all independent media in the country were banned.

A demonstration on Dawit Isaak’s behalf was held in Gothenburg Saturday, during the international book fair, where the theme this year was freedom of expression. Stig Fredrikson, president of an organization that fights for free speech, called on the government and the foreign ministry to do more to help imprisoned journalist.

Dawit was released briefly last November, but was returned to custody after the international attention given the case then.
