Swedish Warship to Lebanon
On Tuesday the outgoing government sent to parliament legislation for Swedish participation in the expanded United Nations force in southern Lebanon.
Sweden will be sending a small naval warship. There’s been criticism that troops are not being sent, but according to press reports, those soldiers are being kept in readiness for the planned United Nations force in Sudan’s troubled Darfur province.
During the recent election campaign both sides agreed on sending the naval force to Lebanon, so approval by parliament is assured.
Sweden has contributed more than 11 million dollars to humanitarian relief in Lebanon, and hosted a donor conference here in Stockholm.
