Sweden has taken the European Commission to court to block use of the weedkiller paraquat.

Arguing before the EU Court of the First Instance in Luxembourg Tuesday, Sweden said that the commission has not demonstrated a single safe way to use the chemical since it was approved within the EU three years ago. Denmark, Finland, and Austria are supporting Sweden in the case.

Paraquat is highly toxic in small quantities, attacking the lungs, and causing damage to the eyes, skin, and hearing. Sweden also says the commission did not investigate indications that the chemical can be a factor behind Parkinson’s Disease.

The commission’s representative argued that parquat is safe as long as instructions are completely followed.
