New Culture Minister Didn’t Pay TV Licence
The newspaper “Dagens Nyheter” has revealed that Sweden’s new Minister of Culture, Cecilia Stegö Chilò, has not paid for a TV viewing licence for the past 16 years.
The licence fee, which is mandatory for anyone with a television set here, finances public broadcasting. The head of the journalists union at Swedish Television has called for the minister’s resignation, saying she has a less than serious attitude towards public broadcasting, which is one of her responsibilities.
Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt says he is very disappointed, but is ready to give his culture minister another chance.
