Growing number of crime witnesses scared into silence

Published fredag 13 oktober 2006 kl 12.22

It is getting more common for witnesses to crimes in Sweden to be threatened and harassed into not testifying in court.

The number of convictions assaults relating to court cases has increased almost five-fold in 10 years and now the Swedish National Council for Crime Prevention is to study the problem.

Researchers say witnesses, victims and even some defendants are threatened by organised crime gangs which effectively makes offenders immune to the justice system.

Prosecutors say they have noticed more people are claiming to have memory loss.
