Two Cabinet Ministers Resign
Swedish Minister of Culture Cecilia Stegö Chilò has resigned, after less than 10 days in office.
Her resignation follows that of Foreign Trade Minister Maria Borelius on Saturday. It had been revealed that both ministers had failed to pay employer’s taxes for nannies and had also neglected to pay the TV licence fee.
The situation worsened for Borelius when irregularies in her stock affairs were exposed, and Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt announced a lawyer would be going through her financial affairs.
Minister of Culture Cecilia Stegö Chilò’s resignation was announced in a press release on the government’s website Monday morning. In the statement she says police complaints for her failure to pay the TV licence fee had made it impossible to clear up the situation and do her job at the same time.
The licence fee funds public broadcasting, and both prominent members of her own Moderate party and the cultural community had called for her resignation.
