Cabinet Minister’s Possible Conflict of Interest

After two new cabinet ministers resigned because of failure to pay taxes or fees, and a similar revelation about the Finance Minister, questions are now being raised about Sweden’s new Minister for Local Government.

Swedish Radio News reports that after being named to his new post Christian Democrat Mats Odell and his wife both left the board of a company that sells services to Swedish municipalities. But they failed to sell off their considerable stock portfolio in the company or to put it into a blind trust.

Odell and his wife together own around one-third of the company in question. Lawyers at the Ministry of Finance are now investigating if this represents a conflict of interest.

In a similar position when he became Communications Minister in the 1990’s, Odell sold off his stock in the Ericsson telecoms company.
