Bosnia Asks for Plavsic Release

Bosnia has asked Sweden to either move convicted Bosnian Serb war criminal Biljana Plavsic to a better prison or to release her.

The request came from Bosnia’s United Nations ambassador, who sent a letter to the Swedish Ministry of Justice, citing Plavsic’s poor health and her age. The 76 year old former Bosnian Serb president is serving her 11 year sentence from the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia at Sweden’s Hinseberg women’s prison.

One of Sweden’s foremost experts in international law has told Swedish Radio News that it could undermine cooperation with international tribunals if Plavsic were to be released after serving only 3 years of her sentence.
