Swedish Radio Live on Cellphones

Published torsdag 8 december 2005 kl 16.04

Swedish Radio is putting its Internet services, including live radio broadcasts, onto mobile phones.

Starting on December 15, Swedish Radio will be making its digital P3 Star channel live over the 3G telephones, along with a downloadable version of the latest Swedish newscast (also available on more advanced GSM phones) and comedy sketches.

The aim is to make all of Swedish Radio’s channels available over 3G phones.

3G operators charge by downloaded megabyte, and under ordinary price lists listening to the radio would cost more than one dollar a minute, which is obviously prohibitive. Swedish 3G operators have agreed to make radio listening free, at least for the time being.

The new service complements Swedish Radio’s existing WAP service, which makes news and sports available to GSM phones, including Radio Sweden’s news in English and German.
