Lars Danielsson testifying to a parliamentary committee

With only months before the elctions here, the political turmoil continues over the Swedish prime minister’s right hand man, Lars Danielsson.

For the first time, blogs have had an impact on politics here.

Danielsson has been sharply criticized for not getting the government in action to help Swedish vicitims of the tsunami disaster in Southeast Asia over a year ago, and has been unable to prove where he was in the first hours after the disaster.

While journalists have stayed away from conjecture, two blogs written by low level officials of the opposition Liberal party claim Danielsson lied to cover up being with a lover – a woman working with him at the prime minister’s office.

On Thursday the woman came forward and denied the claim.

The controversy has led to a debate over the ethics of blogging. The Social Democrats want the Liberal Party to apologize and punish the bloggers. Liberal leader Lars Leijonborg says they were openly stating their opinions.

He contrasts the blogs with a top Social Democrat party official who sent e-mails to newspapers, claiming to be from members of the public concerned over the activities of an opposition leader.
