This evening, Swedish Radio's Director General Cilla Benkö won the 2017 Leader of the Year prize at the Leader Gala in Stockholm, where Sweden's best leaders at all levels and from all industries were named.

For the 15th year in a row Management Magazine organised this evening's Leader Gala, at which Sweden's best leaders at all levels and from all industries were named at the Grand Hotel in Stockholm. The Leader of the Year award went to Swedish Radio's Director General, Cilla Benkö.

"Of course it feels absolutely wonderful and a great honour. Swedish Radio is a forward-looking company where we are all on an exciting journey of change. I would like to thank all of you who every day, with fantastic loyalty, enormous creativity and great good humour, make us the country's most important media company and its leading cultural creator. It's because of you that I go to work every day with a smile on my face", says Swedish Radio's Director General Cilla Benkö.

The jury's verdict reads:

"When the world changes, those who stand still fall behind. She has created world-class relevance and success at a time when the media is becoming increasingly fragmented and when alternatives to radio have grown exponentially. Her passion for her task is as great as her care for her colleagues. She tackles a complex, unwieldy organisation with clarity and integrity and creates proximity to the employees. She places great emphasis on development and on ensuring that the employees themselves see the point of it."

About Cilla Benkö
Cilla Benkö was named as Director General of Swedish Radio on 1 October 2012, after having been deputy Director General since 2009. She has worked for Swedish Radio for more than 25 years, and during this time she has occupied a number of managerial positions. She began her career at Swedish Radio on Radiosporten, before moving to Ekot as an economics reporter. Cilla Benkö has been manager of Ekot and SVT's Aktuellt.

Cilla Benkö is one of 11 members of the EBU's Executive Board and a member of the EBU's Personnel Committee. She is the chair of the Prix Europa and chair of the jury of the UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize.

In 2015, Cilla Benkö was appointed as a member of the Advisory Board for the Media and Communications Department at the London School of Economics (LSE); she is also a member of the board of INSI (the International News Safety Institute).

In 2016 she was awarded the Pontus Schultz prize for her leadership.

About the Leader of the Year award
The prize is awarded by Management Magazine. The aim of the prize is to highlight and reward good examples among Sweden's leaders and to spread their message about good managership and leadership. In 2015 it was won by Christina Forsberg, Director General of CSN (the Swedish Board for Study Support) and former County Police Commissioner in Gävleborg.

Cissi Elwin, CEO and Chief Editor of Management Magazine:

"With the Leader of the Year award, we want to highlight a leader who stands out and is a role model. A leader with passion and personality who inspires other people to good leadership and good results on a daily basis."
