Eliasson Special Envoy to Sudan
With less than two weeks left in office, United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan has appointed Swedish diplomat Jan Eliasson as a special envoy to Sudan.
Eliasson, a former president of the General Assembly and Swedish Foreign Minister, will serve during the transition to Kofi Annan’s incoming successor, Ban Ki-moon of South Korea.
Jan Eliasson and Kofi Annan’s top aide Ahmedou Ould-Abdallah, who has been sent to Khartoum, will try to convince the Sudanese government to accept a greatly strengthened peacekeeping force in the troubled Darfur province.
