Government Leans Towards Nuclear Expansion

Three of the four parties in Sweden’s center-right government alliance appear to be open to the idea of expanding nuclear power here.

The Christian Democrats now say they’re not ruling out new reactors after 2010, with party leader Göran Hägglund saying that increased carbon dioxide emissions are ”perhaps the biggest threat to mankind”.

The Liberals want to go the furthest and are calling for the nuclear program to be expanded, while the Conservative Moderates are considering expansion.

The Center Party want nuclear power to be gradually phased out.

In a recent poll, one-third of Swedes said they would like more reactors to be built while 17 per cent thought the 10 currently in operation should be closed as soon as possible.
