Different Standard for Sweden Democrats

According to Sweden’s independent media watchdog authority, journalists are allowed to be less balanced when reporting on the country’s far right anti-immigrant Sweden Democrat party.

In an unprecedented statement, director of the authority, Cecilia Renfors said that because of the Sweden Democrat’s undemocratic policies, the authority uses another standard when ruling on unfair reporting complaints.

According to Renfors, journalists and media companies are right to express their opposition to the party’s policies-something that would otherwise break Sweden’s strict code of  journalistic ethics.

The statement comes as politicians and the media discuss how best to tackle the rise of the far right in Sweden, after anti-immigrant parties triumphed at polls at last autumn’s regional elections.
