Swedes’ longhaul flights irk experts
Swedes’ growing demand for air travel makes up for some ten percent of Sweden’s carbon dioxide emissions, new research by a team at Lund University shows.
The report, compiled by researchers from Sweden and New Zealand, shows that Swedes travelling abroad account for 10 percent of Sweden’s carbon emissions, double the five percent estimated for the global tourism industry as a whole by the United Nations.
Speaking to Swedish daily Svenska Dagbladet, the report’s authors say the tourist industry lacks effective measures to reduce carbon emissions caused by aircraft.
The researchers also criticise the industry for seeking increasingly distant destinations.
A spokeswoman for one of Sweden’s leading tour operators responded to the criticism by pointing out the search for new destinations was driven purely by customer demand.
