Swedish FM concern after Kosovo poll

Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt has expressed concern over the future of Kosovo after elections in the Serbian province brought former guerrilla leader Hashim Thaci to power.

During the election campaign Thaci pledged if elected he would declare Kosovo independent from the rest of Serbia.

Talking to Swedish Radio News, Bildt described the situation as ”worrying”, adding there was a risk for increased tensions between Kosovo, the rest of Serbia, and Bosnia.

Kosovo is currently a Serbian province, although has been administered by the United Nations since 1999.

Ethnic Albanians, who make up some 90 percent of Kosovo’s two million population are seen as pro-independence, while Serbia is vehemently opposed to any move towards Kosovan autonomy.
