Canine Clamp Down
A new law means a tougher stance against those who mistreat their dogs.
Starting next year, police will be able to ban unsuitable owners from handling or owning man’s best friend. The law also makes it easier for police to seize dangerous dogs.
Injunctions for suspect owners include: restrictions on how long a dog known to bark and disturb neighbours can be left alone; dog handling classes and a prescribed number of walks during the day.
While deadly dog attacks are extremely rare in Sweden, there have been a few highly publicized attacks on people. Sweden has not banned specific dog breeds but the media is quick to point out problems with so called fighting dogs. The Swedish government has maintained that canine aggression is a manifestation of incompetent owners.
