Neglect of the Elderly
A case of neglect in an old-age home has once again raised the question of adequate care for the elderly.
One municipality has terminated its contract with a private health care provider. According to media reports, neglect is commonplace in Sweden’s elderly care facilities, especially within the private sector.
Writing in Friday’s Dagens Nyheter, Public Health Minister Maria Larsson announced the start of an investigation into how to correct today’s situation where personnel caring for the elderly are often lacking in the proper education. Statistics of new recruits show that just 58% were educated as healthcare providers.
