Sony Ericsson Still Number Four
Sony Ericsson has maintained its position as the world’s fourth largest mobile phone manufacturer.
According to the research firm Gartner, during the third quarter the Swedish-Japanese joint venture’s market share increased to 8.8 percent. Nokia remains the leading cellphone maker, followed by Samsung and Motorola.
Sony Ericsson has been criticised by the organization Swedewatch for doing too little to reduce its reliance on child labor. According to Swedish Television News, cobalt for cellphone batteries is mined in the Congo and Zambia, where tens of thousands of children work under dangerous conditions.
Sony Ericsson has rejected the criticism, saying it has placed conditions on its suppliers and regularly checks to make sure they are being followed.
