Theatre Organisers Threatened to Shut Down
Stockholm’s Cultural Deputy Mayor has sent a letter to the Chinese Embassy in Sweden following veiled threats to the Deputy Mayor over the telephone in regard to a planned theatre production coming to Sweden in March.
In the letter, the Deputy Mayor wrote that she wants an explanation over the pressure by the Embassy and also enclosed an explanation as to how democracy works in Stockholm.
According to reports, a civil servant at the Embassy has confirmed the call and explained that they requested the performance to be closed because of alleged links to the Falun Gong movement, which has been under harsh criticism from the Chinese government.
