Prison for False Al-Qaida Tip

The 53-year-old Swedish man who, as an act of revenge against his son-in-law told the FBI that his daughter’s husband had al-Qaida links, has been convicted of criminal defamation.

As well as being sentenced to three months in prison, he has been ordered to pay damages amounting to US$9.450.

The man’s tip-off to the FBI resulted in his son-in-law being detained in Florida and questioned by armed officers before being sent back to Sweden for interrogation when he tried to enter the U.S. on a business trip in 2006.

He was in the middle of divorce proceedings with the man’s daughter at the time. The man has since commented that he didn’t think the authorities would ever believe his tip as they can’t possibly be so ”incredibly stupid.”
