Sweden Supports Cuts in EU Farm Subsidies in favor of Rural Areas

Sweden states that it supports European Commission recommendations to reduce farm subsidies - and using more of the EU budget instead for rural l development.

Observers ask if Sweden and others supporting this line can convince France and others vehemently opposed to cutting back on the subsidies - now devouring a large part of the EU budget.

Meeting his colleagues in Brussels, the Swedish minister of agriculture maintains that the high prices of cereals on the world market provide sufficient profits for the farmers - making it hard to claim that farmers are dependent on the current level of subsidies.

He adds that rural development can provide more funds for environmental improvements in Europe’s countryside.
