2022 - a record year for fatal shootings in Sweden
48 people have so far been shot dead in Sweden in 2022. Thursday night's shooting of a man in Kristianstad, means that the previous annual record from 2020 has been broken - even though it is only September.
A report that the National Crime Prevention Council (Brå) presented in spring last year showed that Sweden was the only one among 22 countries in Europe with an increasing trend of fatal shootings.
Earlier this week, the head of Sweden's national police force Anders Thornberg told news agency TT he believed the death toll will be much higher before the year's end, upwards of 60, he forecast, if the violence continues at its current rate.
