Absent Accused Avoid Court Trials

Swedish legal authorities report that it is becoming more and more common for petty criminals in Sweden to avoid trials - simply by refusing to come to the court house.

Statistics show that l5,000 trials have been suspended in Sweden in the last 3 years because the accused didn’t show up.

The experts argue that tougher measures are needed. As it is now, police are sent to the homes of the accused only in the cases of serous crimes.  In cases of minor crimes, the court usually just sends a letter – often to an address where the suspect no long lives.
