Swedish Foreign Development Criticised for LGBT Work

A new report from the Swedish Federation for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Rights has found that performing homosexual acts is illegal in 85 countries around the world.

Speaking to Swedish Radio news, the chairwoman of the organisation Freedom and Roam Uganda, Kasha Jacqueline, describes an incident in which a teacher beat a girl to death because of rumours that she was a lesbian.

The Federation criticises the Swedish International Development Agency’s, or SIDA, slow progress with LGBT issues in many of these countries.

They say SIDA has shown next to no results in the two years since their project to help LGBT communities began, despite the political pressure to improve conditions in these countries.

SIDA has been working in Europe, Asia, Africa and Latin America but so far only succeeded in making changes in Moldova.
